The human skeleton is a wondrous thing.   • Number of bones

We all know that skeleton is made up of 206 bones, but what most people don’t know is the fact that some individuals don’t contain all of the 206 bones and are born without it and survive. Bones create the structure of the skeletal system. Without them, there would be no skeleton.  

Moreover, one bone needs the help of the other to perform its function and duty. If a bone is damaged or broken, the surrounding bones face a hindrance in performance. 

  • Types of bones

The body contains two types of bones and not just one. One of the bones is the hard one that we all know of. It is made up of dense material and is called cortical bone. These are the structure bones.

The second type of bone is surprisingly soft and spongy. These bones are called trabecular bone. They are found inside the large bone of the pelvis, ribs, and skull. Being soft doesn’t make them any less protective than cortical bones.

  • Bone marrow

Bone marrow is a term that is thrown around a lot in the medical world. Bone marrow provides a roof for stem cells. Bone marrow is basically the spongy tissue inside the bone. Stem cells play a very integral role that includes the production of blood cells, brain cells, heart cells, and bone cells. Stem cells are responsible for producing and reproducing them.

  • Newborn bones

You are actually born with more bones than your regular and average of 206 bones. Since a newborn’s skeleton is so small and soft; it is broken down into tiny bones. As the body ages, these tiny bones fuse and merge to form into larger bones. Hence, resulting in only 206 bones in the adults.

  • Smallest bone

Bones are found even in your ear. It might be hard to believe, that the part that can be easily wiggled and twisted contains a bone but it does. The ear is also the house of the smallest bone in the human body located in the inner ear known as the stapes. 

Another name is given to it because of its unique Y shape known as the stirrup. This bone along with hammer and anvil is responsible for translating sound waves into messages that the brain understands.

  • Longest bone

We have already established that bones are of different sizes. The smallest bone is in the ear and the longest is found in the leg. This bone is the familiar bone femur. It extends from the hips to the knee. Being the largest also makes it the strongest and is also responsible for bearing most of the body weight.  

  • Wear and Tear

The skeleton system is designed as such that it can be bruised or broken and also repair itself with time. Bones are the main shock absorber while also bearing the brunt of a force. They can absorb force and shock twice or thrice times that of abody weight. They are also found to be very strong and resilient. 

  • Location and Connection

More than 50 percent of the bones that are almost 106 bones are found in the hands and feet. All bones are connected via joints that are found throughout the body except in the throat. The hyoid bone is not connected to any joint. This bone also retains the position of the tongue.

  • Ribs

Ribs are one of the most broken bones in the body, especially the 5th and 6th ribs. A rib cage is made of 12 ribs but in some very rare cases, a 13th rib is presently known as the cervical rib. Instead of extra support and protection, this rib can cause certain issues such as stiff neck or neck pain.


Humans might have a skeleton but there numerous species in the world that do not possess one.  For humans, a skeletal system is the basic support that lasts a lifetime.
